In April, 2013, the World Health Organization reported the first known human infections with a novel avian influenza A (H7N9) virus in China. As of April 23, 2013, a total of 108 cases have been reported including 22 deaths. The situation is being closely monitored. The California Department of Public Health has alerted all health care facilities through an All Facility Letter 13-09 as to the precautions that should be taken.
