Throughout the month of April, events and public education campaigns will promote fair housing. April has been regarded as fair housing month since the enactment of the federal Fair Housing Act on April 11, 1968, following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing based on race, color, sex religion, national origin familial status or disability.
US Department of Housing and Urban Development, in conjunction the National Fair Housing Alliance, will be promoting a campaign titled “Fair Housing Is Your Right. Use It.” The national media campaign will include English, Spanish and Chinese radio and print public service advertisements. In addition to the campaign, HUD recently launched a mobile app to provide the public with easy access to learn about fair housing rights and file fair housing discrimination complaints.
More information on the campaign can be found on the National Fair Housing Alliance website.
